The Blue Jay: Backyard Feeder Guide, Intelligence & Bird Art

Bold, intelligent, and impossible to ignore, the Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is one of the most charismatic year-round visitors to North American backyards. With its perky blue crest, striking black necklace, and vibrant mosaic of cobalt, sky-blue, and snow-white feathers, spotting a Blue Jay swooping into the garden feeder brings instant energy and color to any season.

Blue Jay Quick Facts & Identification

  • Scientific Name: Cyanocitta cristata (A member of the highly intelligent Corvidae family, making it a close cousin of crows, ravens, and magpies!)
  • Plumage & Appearance: Both males and females share the same dazzling plumage: a prominent blue crest on the head (which rises when they are excited or alert and flattens when they are relaxed), a bold black collar around the neck, bright white underparts, and intricately barred blue, black, and white wings and tail feathers.
  • Song & Call: Best known for their loud, ringing "jay! jay!" alarm call that warns the entire backyard of approaching predators, Blue Jays also produce soft, musical whistling notes, clicks, and remarkable imitations.
  • Did You Know? Blue Jay Feathers Aren't Actually Blue! Unlike the red pigments in a Northern Cardinal, a Blue Jay's feathers contain brown melanin pigment. The brilliant blue color we see is an optical illusion called structural coloration—microscopic air pockets in the feather barbs scatter light waves so that only vibrant blue light reflects back to our eyes!

Remarkable Intelligence: Forest Planters & Hawk Mimics As members of the corvid family, Blue Jays possess extraordinary problem-solving skills, tight family bonds, and impressive memory. Every autumn, a single Blue Jay can gather and bury thousands of oak acorns to store for winter—and because they don't retrieve every hidden nut, Blue Jays are credited with helping spread and regenerate North America's oak forests after the last glacial period!

They are also master vocal mimics. Blue Jays can flawlessly imitate the piercing scream of a Red-shouldered Hawk or Red-tailed Hawk—either to warn other songbirds that a raptor is in the neighborhood or to trick competitors into clearing away from a busy bird feeder!

How to Attract Blue Jays to Your Backyard Feeder Blue Jays are adaptable woodland and suburban birds that stay in most of their range through the snowy winter months. Here are the three best ways to welcome them to your yard:

  1. Offer Whole Peanuts in the Shell: Nothing attracts a Blue Jay faster than unsalted, roasted peanuts in the shell! Watching a jay weigh several peanuts in its beak to pick out the heaviest prize before flying off to cache it is endlessly entertaining.
  2. Use Wide Platform, Tray, or Peanut Wreath Feeders: Because Blue Jays are larger songbirds (measuring 9 to 12 inches long), they prefer sturdy tray feeders, spacious hopper feeders, or circular wire peanut wreaths where they can comfortably land and perch. They also love black-oil sunflower seeds, suet, and cracked corn.
  3. Provide a Deep Birdbath & Oak Trees: Blue Jays love bathing and drinking fresh water year-round, and yards with mature oak, beech, or pine trees offer the ideal high branches for their sturdy cup nests.
