Atlantic Puffin Quick Facts & Identification

  • Scientific Name: Fratercula arctica (The Latin name translates to "Little Brother of the Arctic," inspired by its black-and-white plumage that resembles the hooded robes of monastic friars!)
  • Size & Appearance: Compact and sturdy, an adult Atlantic Puffin stands only about 10 inches (25 cm) tall—roughly the size of a small football!
  • The Seasonal Changing Beak: A puffin's iconic bright orange, yellow, and slate-blue triangular bill isn't permanent year-round. The vibrant outer plates grow in each spring just in time for the breeding season to attract a mate. Once summer ends, puffins shed those colorful outer layers, revealing a smaller, subtler gray-and-yellow beak for the winter!
  • Where to See Them in North America: In the United States, the rocky offshore islands of Maine (such as Eastern Egg Rock, Matinicus Rock, and Machias Seal Island near Acadia National Park) mark the southernmost breeding colonies of the Atlantic Puffin, alongside vast colonies in Atlantic Canada, Iceland, Scotland, and Norway.

Underwater Fliers & How Puffins Hold Dozens of Fish at Once While puffins may look slightly comical waddling across grassy sea cliffs, they are supreme athletes in the ocean:

  1. Flying Underwater to 200 Feet: Using their compact, muscular wings like flippers and their bright orange webbed feet as a rudder, Atlantic Puffins "fly" through icy ocean waters, diving up to 200 feet deep to hunt sand eels, herring, hake, and capelin. In the air, they beat their wings an incredible 300 to 400 times per minute, reaching speeds of up to 55 mph!
  2. The Hinged Beak Secret: Have you ever wondered how a puffin can catch a dozen small fish one after another without dropping the ones already in its mouth? A puffin's upper palate is lined with backward-pointing spines (called denticles), and its beak features a specialized hinge. The bird pins its earlier catch firmly against the roof of its mouth with its rough tongue while opening its beak underwater to snap up the next fish—returning to the nest with an average of 10 to 20 fish (and a recorded maximum of over 60!) lined up neatly crosswise in its bill!

Clifftop Burrows & Adorable "Pufflings" Atlantic Puffins spend nearly eight months of the year entirely out on the open waves of the North Atlantic, returning to land only in spring and summer to breed. Mated pairs reunite at the exact same grassy clifftop burrow year after year, often touching und tapping their colorful beaks together in a gentle courtship behavior known as "billing."

Inside an underground earthen tunnel dug 2 to 3 feet into the coastal turf, the female lays a single white egg. When the fluffy black chick hatches, it is officially called a "puffling"! Both parents tirelessly bring beakfuls of silver fish to their puffling for six weeks until the young bird sneaks out of the burrow under the cover of night to take its very first solo swim out to sea.
